MADE IN AUSTRIA Furniture Design 1948–1960

The special exhibition invites visitors on a fascinating journey through time: Austrian furniture design from the postwar reconstruction period.

The exhibition showcases new furniture designed to represent the Second Republic on state occasions, chic furnishings for the emerging espresso bar culture, and modern interiors for all levels of society.

In the 1950s, modern furniture design still lay predominantly in the hands of architects. The exhibition will show designs by architects Anna-Lülja Praun and Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, Carl Appel, Carl Auböck (III), Erich Boltenstern, Max Fellerer, Oswald Haerdtl, Julius Jirasek, László Mazák, Otto Niedermoser, Oskar Payer, Roland Rainer, Oskar Riedel, Franz Schuster, Karl Schwanzer, Emil Stejnar, Hans Wölfl and Eugen Wörle.

Austrian furniture design after 1945 is distinguished by the quality of its craftsmanship, the wide variety of forms, and good design even in the case of economy-priced ranges. While mid-century design from Italy, Scandinavia and the USA has become widely known, this exhibition brings back postwar Austrian furniture design into the spotlight, focusing on its special characteristics and qualities

Accompanying the special exhibition, a guided tour in German takes place every 3rd Sunday of every month and on public holidays at 3:00 pm.
