"Schöner Trinken"

To mark the triple anniversary of the 200th anniversary of J. & L. Lobmeyr, the 150th anniversary of the Vienna World Exhibition and the 25th anniversary of the Vienna Furniture Museum, modern drinking glasses by Austrian designers will be the focus of attention at the start of Vienna Design Week from 22 September 2023 to 14 January 2024.

The Old Court Silver and Table Room in Vienna’s Hofburg is home to the drinking glass service of the imperial household, which was an essential component of the associated dining culture. The Vienna court was not only an important client but also a source of inspiration for the modern design of its day. This is clearly demonstrated by the close cooperation with the Vienna glassmaker LOBMEYR.

During the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK and until 14 January 2024, the Vienna Furniture Museum is marking the triple anniversaries of 200 years of LOBMEYR (1823), 150 years since the Vienna World’s Fair (1873) and 25 years of Vienna Furniture Musem (1998) by turning its attention to modern drinking glasses by designers based in Austria.

These show how recent glass design has readdressed the question of stemmed glass or beaker, created completely new forms of drinking glass, and creatively updated the glasses in which traditional drinks such as water, wine, and beer are served. Curated by Eva B. Ottillinger, designed by Sebastian Menschhorn.
