IMPERIAL FURNITURE PROVIDES ATMOSPHERE

The rise of the new medium of film at the beginning of the 20th century demanded new, effective images. Imperial furniture was therefore used as props from the 1920s onwards. The furniture from the Court Depot of Movables, now the Vienna Furniture Museum, was considered functional furniture that could be rented out to generate income.

For Ernst Marischka, the producer of the Sissi films, the imperial furniture was a lucky strike. It enhanced the historical atmosphere of his films by providing them with extensive historical furnishings.

It was not until the 1970s that the rental of furniture for film purposes was discontinued.

Today, furniture from the collection is only used by state institutions or loaned out for exhibition purposes.
