1 THE COURT DEPOT OF MOVABLES

DEPOSITORY AND WORKSHOPS

The Habsburg court travelled extensively. The duties of a ruler in the various parts of the empire required furniture that was both transportable and representative. Thus, the travelling thrones could be used for different purposes with different covers. The court also made frequent visits to various castles and country estates for stays. This meant that the necessary ‘movable property’ (furniture, crockery, etc.) had to be transported there and then returned.

The tasks of the Court Depot of Movables respectively the Court Furniture Inspectorate were to keep the furniture in use for as long as possible. This was achieved through repair orders.

In 1899, Emperor Franz Joseph I. established a central storage location for the furniture with the construction of this building on Mariahilfer Straße, todays Furniture Museum. Adjacent workshops enabled mendings at the same place.
