THE USE OF SPOILS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FRANZENSBURG AND OF ANTIQUES FOR THE FURNISHINGS

Emperor Franz II./I. ordered the construction of a Gothic-style castle, the Franzensburg, on the estate of Laxenburg. According to the ideas of classism and due to the emperor’s thriftiness, historical building materials, known as spolia, from several abandoned stately homes and monasteries were incorporated into the new building.

The interior design also made use of existing furnishings. Cloisters and nobles provided Franz II./I. with Renaissance coffered ceilings and cabinets from the 17th and 18th centuries manufactured in Augsburg and Italian workshops.
